ACL Injury

Evaluation and treatment of anterior cruciate ligament injuries based on individual needs and activity goals.

ACL injuries commonly occur during pivoting, sudden changes in direction, deceleration, landing, or contact sports.

Diagnosis is based on clinical examination, including ligament stability tests, and imaging such as MRI when appropriate.

Treatment Selection

Treatment depends on:

  • The extent of ligament injury
  • The degree of knee instability
  • Patient age and activity level
  • Associated meniscal or cartilage injuries
  • Occupational and sporting requirements
  • Individual treatment goals

Treatment Options

Treatment may include:

Non-Surgical Treatment

Structured rehabilitation may be appropriate for selected patients and may include:

  • • Control of pain and swelling
  • • Restoration of knee movement
  • • Quadriceps and hamstring strengthening
  • • Neuromuscular and balance training
  • • Activity modification
  • • Bracing in selected cases
Surgical Treatment

ACL reconstruction may be considered for appropriately selected patients with symptomatic instability, particularly those who wish to return to pivoting sports or demanding physical activities.

The decision is individualised rather than based solely on the MRI appearance or the grade of the tear.
