Total Knee Replacement

Replacement of damaged joint surfaces to relieve arthritis-related pain and improve mobility.

Total knee replacement is commonly performed for advanced arthritis and other conditions causing severe pain, stiffness, deformity, and loss of function.

During surgery, damaged surfaces of the femur and tibia are prepared and replaced with prosthetic components. A polyethylene bearing surface is placed between the components to allow smooth movement. The patella may also be resurfaced depending on the individual case and surgical plan.

Potential Benefits

Total knee replacement may help to:

  • Significantly reduce pain caused by advanced arthritis
  • Improve walking ability and daily function
  • Correct many forms of arthritis-related deformity
  • Improve knee alignment and movement
  • Enable patients to return to many normal daily activities

Modern knee replacement implants can provide durable function for many years. Implant longevity varies according to patient factors, implant design, surgical factors, activity, and other individual considerations.
