Meniscus Repair

Preserving and repairing the natural shock-absorbing tissue of the knee whenever appropriate.

The menisci are specialised fibrocartilaginous structures that help distribute load, absorb shock, improve joint stability, and protect the articular cartilage. When a meniscus is torn, treatment depends on the type, location, size, and stability of the tear, as well as the patient's age, activity level, symptoms, and associated injuries. Where healing potential and tear characteristics are favourable, meniscal repair may be preferred over removal of the damaged tissue.

Treatment Options

Depending on the individual tear, treatment may include:

  • Structured non-surgical rehabilitation
  • Arthroscopic meniscal repair using appropriate repair techniques
  • Selective partial meniscectomy when a tear is irreparable and symptomatic
  • Specialised treatment for meniscal root, radial, ramp, and other complex tears

Potential Benefits of Meniscal Preservation

  • Preservation of functional meniscal tissue
  • Maintenance of the knee's load-distribution function
  • Potential reduction in the risk of progressive joint degeneration compared with unnecessary removal of meniscal tissue

Recovery

Recovery depends significantly on the type of repair.

Weight-bearing & Mobility

Some repairs require a period of restricted weight-bearing and protected knee movement. Others may allow earlier progression of movement and weight-bearing.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is progressively advanced according to the tear pattern, repair stability, associated procedures, and healing requirements.

Return to sport

Return to running and sport is generally a gradual process and may take several months.
