Total Hip Replacement

Replacement of a damaged hip joint to relieve pain and restore mobility and function.

Total hip replacement may be recommended for advanced hip arthritis, avascular necrosis, certain fractures, and other conditions causing severe pain and functional limitation.

The damaged femoral head is replaced with a prosthetic component, and the damaged acetabular surface is replaced with an artificial socket. Different combinations of implant materials and bearing surfaces may be selected according to the patient's age, anatomy, bone quality, activity level, and clinical requirements.

Potential Benefits

Total hip replacement may help to:

  • Reduce hip and groin pain
  • Improve walking and daily function
  • Improve hip movement
  • Address arthritis-related limb-length discrepancy where appropriate
  • Restore function in patients with severe hip joint damage

Recovery

Specific precautions depend on the surgical approach, implant stability, and individual patient factors.

First few days

Early mobilisation and walking with assistance where medically appropriate.

First few weeks

Progressive walking and strengthening, with precautions where indicated.

Following weeks to months

Gradual return to normal daily activities.

Long-term

Most patients are able to return to walking, stairs, and many routine activities after appropriate recovery.
