Complex Trauma Care

Management of complex fractures and high-energy orthopaedic injuries.

Complex orthopaedic trauma may include:

  • Comminuted fractures
  • Open fractures
  • Periarticular fractures
  • Pelvic and acetabular injuries
  • Multiple fractures
  • Fracture-dislocations
  • Injuries involving significant soft-tissue damage

Treatment Modalities

Treatment may involve a combination of:

  • - Temporary or definitive external fixation
  • - Internal fixation using plates and screws
  • - Intramedullary nailing
  • - Percutaneous fixation
  • - Soft-tissue management
  • - Staged reconstruction

Staged Treatment Approach

In selected high-energy injuries, treatment may follow a staged approach:

Stage 1: Initial Stabilisation

Stabilisation of the patient and injured limb, management of soft tissues, and temporary fixation when required.

Stage 2: Definitive Reconstruction

Definitive fixation once the patient and surrounding soft tissues are suitable for further surgery.

Stage 3: Rehabilitation

Progressive movement, strengthening, weight-bearing, and functional rehabilitation according to the injury and reconstruction.
